Swimming pools on Lake Garda, or a swim in the lake?

It sounds like an idle question beside a body of water covering almost four hundred square kilometres, and yet it is the first thing families ask. The shores of Lake Garda are mostly shingle, the water stays cool well into June, and attended stretches are few. Swimming pools on Lake Garda solve precisely those three problems.

What swimming in the lake is actually like

The water temperature follows the volume of the lake: it warms slowly in spring and holds its warmth into October. In practice swimming is comfortable from late June to mid-September, while in May and October the water sits around eighteen degrees, fine for a few minutes and not for an afternoon with children.

The bed is almost always pebbles, often with a sharp drop a few metres from the shore. Sandy beaches are rare and concentrated in a handful of spots in the southern basin, where in July and August the competition for a parasol starts at eight in the morning.

Swimming pools on Lake Garda therefore extend the season at both ends and provide something the shoreline cannot: water at a constant temperature, a predictable bottom and shade when you want it. They do not replace the lake, they sit alongside it.

Garda Hotel San Vigilio Golf has four distinct water areas across 110 hectares of parkland, usable across different seasons.

Indoor, outdoor or natural: what changes

The covered pool is the one that genuinely extends the season. It measures 15 by 8 metres, is filled with saltwater and held between 29 and 31 degrees, heated through the winter months, with a cascade wall and glazing onto the golf course. On a raised terrace sits the hydromassage tub, between 31 and 33 degrees.

The outdoor freshwater pool, the same size, stays open from April to October and is framed by a palm garden, connecting directly with the spa.

The third format is still uncommon among swimming pools on Lake Garda: the Bionatura covers 1,000 square metres between the golf course and the garden, and holds its balance through a phytodepuration system rather than conventional chemical treatment. With no chlorine, the difference is noticeable on skin and eyes.

It is the option families take to most readily, because children have room to play and parents stay in the shade of the trees. The pool bar serves cocktails, smoothies and light snacks at the water's edge.

Pool in the morning, lake in the afternoon

The property sits in Pozzolengo, on the moraine hills between Desenzano and Sirmione. You can spend the morning by the pool and the afternoon on the lakefront or at the Grottoes of Catullus, or reverse the order and close the day with a swim in the Bionatura at sunset. All the water areas are included in the stay, with no supplements, no parasol to reserve and reserved parking on arrival.
